Getting Serious About Writing a Series

Monthly Meeting–Saturday, April 6, 2013 The Frisco Room at The Library Station, 2535 N. Kansas Expressway, Springfield, MO

Critique group at 10:00 a. m. followed by lunch at Panera and our speaker at 1:00 p. m.

Author Lisa Wells to present “Getting Serious About Writing a Series: An Introduction”

Our very own Lisa Wells is presenting an introduction to her popular online course, Getting Serious About Writing a Series.

Learn the “musts” of writing a series.

Lisa Wells is a 22-year veteran educator. For the past 16 years, she has enjoyed a rollercoaster journey called: The School Counselor – Dramas, Dreams, and Destinies. Add the theme song to “Jaws,” and you have the feel for this fun ride.

Author of “Dibs,” a sexy romance nominated as Debut Book That Rocks and Best Book of The Year, Lisa believes writers should never quit studying their craft. When she decided to write a series and couldn’t find affordable material that taught the nuances of writing series vs. stand alone books, she designed her own how-to class. Self-appointed number one fan of Margie Lawson, she was thrilled to be given the opportunity to unveil her class at Lawson Writer’s Academy.

My parents claim they found me in a pineapple patch in Hawai'i and brought me home.  I grew up in South Texas reading Tolkien, Asimov, and Robert E. Howard .  I've always loved telling stories, and in high school, I wrote pulp style action adventures for my friends.  Since then, I've been filling notebooks and hard drives with stories and ideas.

After I graduated from Calallen High School, I joined the Air Force to see the world.  The Air Force had other ideas, and I ended up in Kansas, and fled at the first opportunity for greener anything.  My travels eventually brought me to Missouri, where I live today.Over the years, I've studied or learned about archery, swordfighting, Wicca, a host of other religions, massage therapy, reiki and a list of other skills that have no particular use outside of an historical recreation event.  Three of the best years of my life were spent working in a New Age/pagan bookstore.

Like a lot of writers, I have music that I listen to when I write.  I use Pandora.com and Playlist.com to keep me focused when there are distractions in the house around me or when I need to get into a particular frame of mind. I'm always looking for new music that creates a similar mood as the songs on this list.

Award-winning multi-published author Tracy Garrett has always loved to disappear into the pages of a book. An accomplished musician, Tracy merged her need for creativity, love of history, and passion for reading when she began writing western historical romance. Her first novel was published in 2007. A member of Romance Writers of America, Tracy is serving on the RWA Board of Directors as the Region 2 Director, and is a member of Missouri Romance Writers of America (MORWA), Ozarks Romance Authors (ORA), and Dallas Area Romance Authors (DARA). Tracy resides in Missouri with her husband and their fuzzy pal, Wrigley.

Historical

Louisa Cornell is a retired opera singer living in the wilds of LA (Lower Alabama.) A three year stay in England as a child (Air Force Brat) began her lifelong addiction to all things British. An early introduction to the novels of Jane Austen during those same three years began an affair with the Regency which with time only seems to grow stronger. When not writing and researching her romance novels set in Regency England, she is forced to manage a bakery for the local Walmart. (It pays for little luxuries like food and living indoors.) What’s next? Published historical romance author, no matter how long it takes!

After a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, Woody P. Snow returned to major in music at College of The Ozarks and went on to write a major pop hit song in the 70s. Known mostly asa radio show host, he has also appeared as an actor on national TV and in movies. A multi award winning screenplay writer, he is now working on his third novel andplanning a new radio show, which will debut some time in July. He is married to Jackie Johnson and lives with their three dogs and four cats.

Young Adult

Amy DeLuca

Amy DeLuca was born in Mississippi and has lived in six states including Rhode Island, where she now enjoys the beautiful beaches for two months a year and good "writing weather" during the rest of it. She has been a radio DJ and a lead vocalist in a house band on Memphis' famed Beale Street, but mostly she’s been paid to write. Amy spent 13 years as a news anchor and reporter for television stations in Mississippi, Tennessee, California, and Rhode Island before retiring from writing true stories to focus on her  family and on making things up.

Cecily White, Psy.D. is a part-time university professor and full-time mom who loves messing with her characters’ lives. After surviving (barely) her childhood in New Orleans, she's gone on to work as hand model, GAP salesgirl, movie projectionist, psychotherapist, yoga instructor, dance choreographer, psych diagnostician, rock n’ roll drummer/singer, book reviewer and copy editor. . . none of which are as cool as writing novels. At current, she is a 2012 Golden Heart Finalist, and her debut trilogy, ANGEL ACADEMY will hit the bookshelves via Entangled Publishing next Summer, 2013.

Special skills include swearing in Klingon, taking down alien aggressors with her mind (or chopsticks), and killing spiders without getting schmutz on her shirt. Cecily currently lives in Springfield, Missouri with one husband, two children, and a schizophrenic yet well-mannered cat. When not singing back-up for her kids, she spends time creating new worlds and thinking up ways to make this one better. You can visit her at www.cecilywhite.com or tweet her @CecilyWhite.

Fran Young is new to writing, although she has no viable excuse for taking so long to record the constant chatter in her head. Fran was on the move early & has, for example, been through the Panama Canal ten times. Against their will, she whisked her family from their newly purchased home to years of teaching around the world as an international educator while raising two fine children (they've since voiced appreciation). Inordinately thrilled to find her letter to the editor included in Writer’s Digest, Fran has also written non-fiction articles & is currently working as a Reader/Editor for Hippocampus Magazine online. Bomber Babe is her first YA novel.

Jeanmarie Anaya is a YA fiction writer, attorney, and obsessive book lover. Her books are treated like royalty—corners of pages are seldom turned down, hardcover jackets are firmly attached, and paperbacks with accidental creases are properly lamented. Each night she trades her law journals for The Chicago Manual of Style and The Synonym Finder in the pursuit of having her own novels sit on her bookshelf (and yours) one day. She also recently earned a spot as a finalist in the San Diego RWA's 2012 Spring Into Romance Contest and the New Hampshire RWA's 2012 Query Quandary Contest.

Tif Johnson is a registered nurse by education, but a Jill of all trades out of pure necessity. When not writing, you will find her running, reading, and crafting, all the while chasing after her four wonderfully curious children. As a proud Army wife, this displaced Californian has found inspiration in every place she’s lived in, and in all of the adventures this nomadic life has brought her.  She currently lives in Northern Virginia with her clan along with their extraordinarily sweet Boxer-dog, Sugar.

Paranormal/Sci-fi

Christine Canada is a speech language therapist by day and an aspiring author by night. She lives in IL with her wonderful husband, a twenty-five pound shih tzu, and a beagle/German shepherd who thinks shoes make the best chew toys. When she’s not writing, she can be found reading, playing Angry Birds, or shopping for replacement shoes.

Ginny Lynn is Georgia born with Alabama roots, so in essence, she’s related to herself. She specializes in edgy, quirky tales of southern vampires, wraiths, trolls, werewolves, witches, sirens and more. She loves making fully boned lacing corsets, eating cinnamon rolls, dancing to Nine Inch Nails, and wenching at the Renaissance fair in between work, writing, school, and family. No matter how many personas she has, she’s always a writer. She’s a firm believer in laughter being the best medicine and always carries a double dose with her. She loves books by Laurell K. Hamilton, Katie Macalister and anything by her Laptops and Lingerie blog site friends Maggie Montgomery and C.E. Hart.

Cori Deyoe

Cori Deyoe (Three Seas Literary Agency) - Cori Deyoe has over 20 years of experience in the writing industry. She is a published author at Silhouette (national and international). She has also been published in various non-fiction projects. As an employee of 3 Seas Literary Agency since June, 2006, she traded in her "author's" hat for a brand new one -- "literary agent" and concentrates on her clients' writing only.

Backed by the success of Michelle Grajkowski and 3 Seas Literary Agency, Cori handles her job and clients with the same commitment and values Michelle believes in.

Cori's clients appreciate her experience in the publishing world, and she has a special talent for editing.

On a personal note, Cori loves reading, traveling, photography, dogs, cats, horses and all animals.

Lucienne Diver

Lucienne Diver (The Knight Agency) - Lucienne Diver joined TKA in 2008, after spending fifteen years at New York City’s prestigious Spectrum Literary Agency. With her sharp eye and gift for spotting original new voices, Lucienne is one of the most well-respected agents in the industry. A lifelong book addict, she graduated summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Potsdam with dual majors in English/writing and anthropology. She thus came well-equipped for her work as an agent. Over the course of her dynamic career she has sold over seven hundred titles to every major publisher, and has built a client list of more than forty authors spanning the commercial fiction genres, primarily in the areas of fantasy, science fiction, romance, mystery, suspense and erotica. Her authors have been honored with the RITA, National Readers’ Choice Award, the Golden Heart, and the Romantic Times Reader’s Choice, and have appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. A publishing veteran, Lucienne has superb industry knowledge, numerous editor relationships, and a keen understanding of the foreign rights market. She is a member of the Association of Authors Representatives, RWA, MWA and SFWA.

Jennifer Brown

Jennifer Brown - Two-time winner of the Erma Bombeck Global Humor Award (2005 & 2006), Jennifer's weekly humor column appeared in The Kansas City Star for over four years, until she gave it up to be a full-time young adult novelist.

Jennifer's debut novel, HATE LIST (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2009) received three starred reviews and was selected as an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a VOYA "Perfect Ten," and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. HATE LIST also won the Michigan Library Association's Thumbs Up! Award, was an honorable mention for the 2011 Arkansas Teen Book Award, is a YALSA 2012 Popular Paperback, received spots on the Texas Library Association's Taysha's high school reading list as well as the Missouri Library Association's Missouri Gateway Awards list, and has been nominated for the Oklahoma Sequoyah Award. Jennifer's second novel, BITTER END, (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2011) received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and VOYA and is listed on the YALSA 2012 Best Fiction for Young Adults list and is a 2012 Taysha's high school reading list pick as well.

Jennifer writes and lives in the Kansas City, Missouri area, with her husband and three children.

Rob Thurman

Rob Thurman - Rob Thurman is currently writing three series for Penguin Putnam’s imprint ROC FANTASY: The CAL LEANDROS Novels, The TRICKSTER Novels, and The CHIMERA Novels. Her first book, NIGHTLIFE, was released in 2006. She has written eight books to date and is releasing two more in 2011. She has also written for a Charlaine Harris & Toni L.P. Kelner Anthology, WOLFSBANE AND MISTLETOE.

Although she does not write Young Adult, her first Urban Fantasy book in The CAL LEANDROS Series—NIGHTLIFE—has received a 2011 Eliot Rosewater Award Nomination for Excellence in High School Libraries—rather to her bemusement as she’d be the first to say her books are not for younger teens. Apparently, the librarians and teens disagree!

Rob’s work is dark, non-stop action from beginning to end, rife with purely evil sarcasm as sharp as a switchblade—and probably nearly as illegal. If one shoved LORD OF THE RINGS, THE SHINING, and PULP FICTION into a wood-chipper, the result would be what Rob aims to deliver in her Urban Fantasy novels.

Rob’s main protagonists are almost exclusively written in a male perspective; in fact, she was “in the closet” as a female writer until her third book, when she posted her bio on her website. Some fans took note and some did not as she received one comment saying, “Thank God! A man is finally writing a male point-of-view. Women simply can’t do it.” Whether this was a compliment or insult is still uncertain, but Rob shrugged and went on.

When asked why she uses a male pen name, she responds that with her books frequently being written in a male “voice,” it might momentarily confuse or cause a disconnect in the buyers’ minds to see a female name on the cover before they begin scanning the book. Besides, family and friends have called her Rob her entire life.

A member of the SFWA, Rob Thurman lives in rural Indiana—land of endless fields, infinite cows and where dial-up is still the only soul-crushing option.

Leigh Michaels
Leigh Michaels

Leigh Michaels - Leigh Michaels is the author of nearly 100 books, including 80 contemporary novels, three historical romance novels, and more than a dozen non-fiction books. More than 35 million copies of her romance novels have been published. Six of her books have been finalists for Best Traditional Romance novel in the RITA contest sponsored by Romance Writers of America. She has received two Reviewer's Choice awards from Romantic Times.

Her work has been translated and published in 120 countries in more than 25 languages, including Japanese, Korean, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, Czech, Bulgarian, Russian, Turkish, Hebrew, Greek, Swedish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Africaans, Arabic, Indonesian, and Chinese.

She is the 2003 recipient of the Johnson Brigham Award presented by the Iowa Library Association to an Iowa author for outstanding contributions to literature.

She is the author of On Writing Romance, published by Writers Digest Books.

She is the author of non-fiction books such as WRITING THE ROMANCE NOVEL, a step-by-step workbook, and CREATING ROMANTIC CHARACTERS. She is also the author of DEAR LEIGH MICHAELS: A Novelist Answers the Most-Asked Questions about Getting Published, and a cookbook, A TASTE OF LOVE. She has produced audio programs and written magazine articles on subjects of interest to writers in general.

She teaches romance writing on the Internet at Gotham Writers= Workshop, www.writingclasses.com. Men and women from around the world have participated in her workshops, and a number of them have gone on to publish their own romance novels with commercial publishers. She is currently an adjunct professor in the School of Communications at the University of Iowa.

She wrote her first romance novel when she was a teenager and burned it, then wrote and burned five more complete manuscripts before submitting to a publisher. Her first submission was accepted and published by Harlequin Books, the first publisher to look at it.

Steven Law

Steven Law - Steven is the publisher of Goldminds Publishing. He has written and published four novels. His latest, “Yuma Gold,” is scheduled for release by Penguin Group in New York in November 2011. For 12 years, he has worked as a literary publicist for as many as 30 best-selling authors, including New York Times best-seller Stephen Harrigan, Pulitzer Prize finalist S. C. Gwynne, and the late Elmer Kelton.

As a publicist, he has worked with numerous publishing houses, including Alfred Knopf, Tor/Forge Books, St. Martin’s Press, Little Brown, and others. Hometown of Ozarks Romance Authors Voted 3rd-Most Romantic City in USA by Amazon.com

Springfield, Missouri -- where Ozarks Romance Authors is based -- was just ranked by Amazon.com as the third-most romantic city in the USA! Jill Slack, 2010-2012 President of Ozarks Romance Authors, a nonprofit Missouri writers' group Our local newspaper, the Springfield News-Leader, called to interview ORA President Jill Slack to see what we think of this honor. Jill is quoted in a story on the front page of the Saturday, February 11, 2012 edition.

We saved a screenshot of the story to share with you.

What did Jill have to say?

Jill Slack, president of Ozarks Romance Authors, said she thinks the rating isn’t necessarily because Springfield is a romantic place all on its own.

“I think it’s more that it’s the people,” Slack said. “It’s more of a traditional area.”

Slack also said there are quite a few writers in the Ozarks, which might be why romance book sales are higher — purchased for inspiration.

“When you’re a writer, you’re also a voracious reader,” Slack said.

We're so proud of her! Let's take a look at the book's blurb, shall we?

On the outside, Romy Farrington has the perfect life—a world-famous archaeologist father and upcoming marriage to a wealthy businessman. But to Romy, her new life among the elitists is like a punishment.

For years, she traveled the world at her father's side, exploring new lands and uncovering ancient secrets. It was everything she ever wanted, until a near-fatal encounter with hostile natives forced her and her father into a life of retirement in Boston and an undesired advance into proper society.

Everything changes again when she's saved from an accident by a brash Texan in a back alley. Abel Courte may act like a care-free cowboy, but he's harboring a secret—he's searching for the Diamond of Uktena, a legendary jewel that can cure any disease known to man. He needs information Romy's father has in order to get to the jewel. When he traces the origin of the Diamond to Dakota Territory, he sets off to claim the treasure, only to find the archaeologist's fiery redheaded daughter stuck to him like a bug in sap.

Artist Maggie Monroe wants to see the West. Her cousin wants to see her dead. When an unplanned accident strands them in a rough outpost, Maggie becomes collateral for her cousin's gambling debt.

Rafe McBride is in town to buy supplies, not a woman. But when he sees a courageous lady facing a future with a murderous trapper, Rafe shouts the winning bid.

Determined to protect Maggie and return her home, Rafe and she trudge through a blizzard, trailed by her cousin, the angry trapper Rafe outbid, and Rafe's past. Snowbound, Rafe and Maggie are forced to face their enemies -- and their feelings for each other.

About Jennifer Jakes:

A chronic insomniac, Jennifer says she got used to making up stories while waiting to fall asleep. It was a lot more interesting than counting sheep. Maybe too interesting, because she started staying awake so she could figure out "what happened" to her characters. For the sake of her health, she began writing the stories on paper - during the day. So far it's working out pretty good:)

She is a member of Romance Writers of America, MORWA, and Ozarks Romance Authors. She also has two great critique partners who she can't thank enough. They taught her a LOT!

Clarion car stereo speakers = Clarion Hotel Conference Center?

This is kind of funny!

It looks like someone has a blog set up to pull its content automatically from other sources on the web. The blog is about car stereo equipment. It picked up on the fact that our July 23 writers' conference will be held at The Clarion in Springfield, Missouri, and posted information about us.

Clarion Hotel = Clarion stereo speakers?

Apparently they found us through the news story on the Joplin, Missouri-based web site JoplinIndependent.com, so this stereo speaker site linked to that article.

If you're looking for Clarion speakers for your car stereo, we can't help you. However, if you are an aspiring author, we would love to meet you and see how our members, our critique group, and our monthly meetings with fabulous speakers can help you work toward your publishing dreams.

Barnes & Noble, Brangelina, Game Stop, and Ozarks Romance Authors -- Oh, my!

Hi, future attendees of Ozarks Romance Authors' annual conference, which will be held in Springfield, Missouri, on July 23, 2011. (Sorry! I got the year wrong in the video.)

I wanted to show you something interesting. We're going to have a little quiz later.

Click to watch the short video at the top of this page and you will drive around with me (Jill, 2010-2011 president of Ozarks Romance Authors) in a parking lot on the southwest corner of East Battlefield and South Glenstone in Springfield, Missouri.

You'll see several buildings in the same, large parking lot.

There is a small building with a Game Stop store in the north end and an AT&T Wireless store in the south side. Behind this Game Stop building is the only Barnes & Noble store in Springfield.

Here is the quiz: What could the Game Stop building possibly have in common with this Barnes & Noble, which is where we're going to have the booksigning for our speakers the evening before our annual fiction writers' conference?

The booksigning will be here at Barnes & Noble, within walking distance of The Clarion Hotel, which is where our conference is taking place. The booksigning will be Friday, July 22, which is the night before our conference, from 4:00 - 6:00, here in this large, lovely Barnes & Noble store.

Are you curious about what this Barnes & Noble might have in common with the little Game Stop building?

I'll give you two hints. The clues about what they have in common are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Yes, Brangelina.

Does that make you even more curious?

By the way, be sure to plan on attending our:

* Booksigning Friday, July 22, here at Barnes & Noble, 3055 S. Glenstone

* Annual Writers' Conference just down the road at The Clarion Hotel, 3333 S. Glenstone

in Springfield, Missouri.

Now, if you are curious about what this Barnes & Noble store (where our booksigning will take place) has in common with the Game Stop building, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie, here are the details!

Ready?

1. GAME STOP BUILDING -- BRAD

Colonel Day's Levi's Emporium, which is where Brad Pitt worked as a sales clerk between the time that he graduated from Springfield's Kickapoo High School and went to seek his fame and fortune in Hollywood, used to be the only tenant in the Game Stop/AT&T building.

At that time, Brad looked like this: Brad Pitt, Kickapoo High School, Springfield, Missouri

I couldn't find any photos of the old Colonel Day's store, but the building has not changed much. Currently, the building looks like this:

Former site of Colonel Day's Levi's Emporium, where Brad Pitt worked as a teenager in Springfield, Missouri.

Back then, it had an odd stucco finish with deep grooves to match the exterior of the Venture store on the west side of the parking lot. These were the only two buildings on the parking lot at that time, but the lot now also has Barnes & Noble, Office Depot, and Olive Garden.

Springfield's Venture store in the 1970s. Currently K-Mart.

The Venture store has been gone for many years and is now a K-Mart store.

This is the K-Mart Brad and some of the kids reportedly shopped at during their December 2010 trip to Springfield.

2. GAME STOP BUILDING -- ANGELINA

Take a closer look at the windows in the Game Stop building. Who do you see there, along with Super Mario? Posters in Game Stop window, the former site of Colonel Day's.

Yup, that's an image of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, long before she and Brad became Brangelina. The Game Stop building has several large images of Angelina hanging in its windows.

Gee, I wonder if that was the topic of conversation on the Jolie-Pitt private jet. "Darling, did you see the large posters of me in the windows where you used to work? Shall I have the longitude and latitude added to the tattoo on my bicep?"

3. BARNES & NOBLE / STARBUCKS

This is the Barnes & Noble store that became famous in December 2010 when, while in town to visit Brad's family, Angelina stopped at the Starbucks inside of the bookstore and bought coffee. News of the sighting of Angelina, Zahara, and Shiloh made its way onto the Internet, including:

It was also during this visit that Brad and Angelina posed for photos at St. John's Hospital (where I was born) to dedicate the new Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center, named in honor of Brad's mom, Jane Pitt. To see the story in People magazine, click HERE.

Directions to The Clarion Hotel for our Annual Conference July 23, 2011

Hi everyone! We sure hope you're as excited about Ozarks Romance Authors' annual conference coming up on Saturday, July 23, 2011, as we are!

Since the directions in Mapquest are a little confusing, we wanted to post a couple of videos and explain the wacky way to find the hotel.

The Clarion's address is 3333 S. Glenstone Avenue here in Springfield, Missouri, and the hotel faces Glenstone. However, you can't turn into the hotel's parking lot from Glenstone. That's the wacky part.

IF YOU'RE COMING FROM THE SOUTH (FROM BRANSON, HEADED NORTH TOWARD SPRINGFIELD)

If you're coming from the south down Highway 65 (from Branson, headed north toward Springfield), you have a few options. You can exit Highway 65 and get on the James River Freeway heading west, and then take the northbound Glenstone exit. If you take this route, you'll be headed north on Glenstone and you'll drive past The Clarion.

At this point, Mapquest's confusing directions tell you to make a U-turn. WRONG! You'll see The Clarion and the Ford dealership on your left (the west side of the street) and then you'll see the traffic light at the intersection of Glenstone and Erie. Turn left (west) on Erie and be ready to make an IMMEDIATE left turn (south) in front of the Ford dealership. Stay on this little access road until it is about to dead-end and then you'll turn right (west) into the hotel's parking lot.

We took this route to show you what to expect, and here is the video:

http://youtu.be/sjIEeR0STmo

IF YOU'RE COMING FROM THE NORTH

If you're coming from the north, you probably:

* came in on Interstate 44 and took the Glenstone exit, and headed south on Glenstone

* came from the north on Highway 65, headed south, and took the Battlefield exit, and then came west on Battlefield and turned south on Glenstone

* came from the west (headed east) on Battlefield and turned south on Glenstone

this next video will make more sense to you.

At the intersection of Battlefield and Glenstone, you'll see Barnes & Noble on the southwest corner. This is where we're having our booksigning on from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, by the way.

Go south on Glenstone and you will pass Barnes & Noble and Olive Garden. The traffic light will be Erie. Turn right (west) on Erie and be prepared to make an IMMEDIATE left (south) in front of the Ford dealership. Follow this little road until it is about to dead-end and make a right (west) into The Clarion's parking lot.

Here is a video to show what it looks like coming toward The Clarion from this direction:
